PREVENTS PREMATURE DUSTCOVER WEAR.
PROBLEM.
- In case of an open steering knuckle, the edge of the opening is scraping against the dustcover of the ball joint.
- This friction causes early wear to the dust cover.
- A damaged dust cover causes water infiltration, with corrosion and a reduced lifespan as a result.
SIDEM NXT. SOLUTION.
- By adding an extra feature, Sidem extends the lifespan significantly.
- An extra metal ridge above the top of the dust cover prevents direct rubber to metal contact.
- No more friction between the steering knuckle and the dust cover and a much longer lifespan.
RIDGED BALL JOINTS
PREVENT EARLY FAILURE.
Ball joints connect the track control arm with the steering knuckle, allowing both steering and suspension movements. As they constantly move, they are naturally subject to wear. However, a well designed ball joint will take you sufficiently further!
PROBLEM: PREMATURELY BALL JOINT FAILURE.
Water is one of the main enemies of a ball joint. Once it makes its way inside the joint, corrosion will wear it down rapidly. This is why quality dustcovers on ball joints, along with the correct sealing pressure of the dustcover rings, are vital for its lifetime.
In the OE-design of several ball joints with cylindrical ball pin we’ve noticed early wear of the dustcover. This is caused by the friction of the dustcover against the open steering knuckle. The edge of the steering knuckle scraping against the top of the dustcover, wearing it down rapidly and destroying the sealing for water. As a result, the ball joint starts to corrode and wears out.
SIDEM’S SOLUTION: THE RIDGED BALL JOINT.
Sidem’s Quality and R&D department joined forces to redesign these ball joints. The solution was found in adding a metal ridge just above the top of the dust cover. This ridge prevents contact between the top of the dustcover and the steering knuckle. Without this contact, the dustcover is secured to perform without friction and risk of failure.
Additionally, as frequently applied with Sidem ball joints, a dustcover seat is applied to prevent the dustcover from collapsing during mounting.
