Steering rack gaiters play a vital role in the overall health of your vehicle’s steering system. They are designed to keep harmful elements away from the delicate inner components of the steering rack and the axial joints. When these components are exposed to dirt, water, and road grime, they wear out much faster, leading to steering issues and costly repairs.

 

HOW TO INSPECT STEERING RACK GAITERS FOR WEAR AND TEAR.

Regular inspection of steering rack gaiters is a simple yet crucial task that helps prevent more significant issues over time. Begin by visually inspecting the gaiters for any visible signs of damage. Look for cracks, tears, splits, or holes in the rubber material, as these can develop due to age, exposure to harsh weather, or the constant movement of the steering components.

Ensure the gaiters are dry and free from leaks. Any signs of grease leaking from the gaiters could indicate insufficient lubrication and contamination of the steering components, both of which require immediate attention.

Assess the flexibility of the gaiters. Gently press on the rubber to ensure it remains pliable and resilient. If the material feels brittle or overly soft, it may have degraded and lost its protective function. Replacing worn gaiters promptly is essential for maintaining the performance and extending the lifespan of the steering system.

 

RISKS OF STEERING RACK GAITER FAILURE.

If steering rack gaiters fail and are not promptly replaced, several risks arise which can affect the steering behaviour and safety of your vehicle.

Contamination of the Steering Rack: The primary function of steering rack gaiters is to protect the steering rack and axial joints from contaminants. When they fail dirt, water and debris can infiltrate the steering system. This contamination can lead to accelerated wear of the steering rack and tie rods, leading to premature failure.

Corrosion and Rust: Once contaminants like water enter the steering rack, they can cause corrosion on the metal components. Corrosion weakens these components and increases the friction in the joint, leading to excessive wear and failure.
